In 1938, a museum curator in Baghdad examined a small clay jar holding a copper tube wrapped around an iron rod, sealed with asphalt. Fill it with vinegar and it still produces a working electric current. Nobody disputes what it can do. Nobody agrees on what it was built for.

In June 1992, a farmer testing a village legend rented four pumps to drain a pond everyone called bottomless. It emptied into a hand-carved stone hall the size of a cathedral. Two dozen more caves turned up nearby. No document explains them, and nothing found inside does either.

In 1845, two Royal Navy ships sailed into the Canadian Arctic carrying 129 men, hunting the Northwest Passage. A note found six years later records both ships abandoned and the commander already dead. The wrecks turned up in 2014 and 2016. What killed the men has never been settled.

In 1898, a photographer developing his negative of a cloth watched a face resolve out of the dark, as though the shroud had been printed in reverse before cameras existed. A 1988 test dated it to the Middle Ages. A 2022 study reopened the question. Nobody has explained the image.
